Death of a little bird

Tadeu and I were just coming back from a walk when we met this little bird on the sidewalk in front of our building. It was a little bigger than a canary and it wasn't managing to fly for some reason, it could only do short jumps.
Tadeu, being a hunting dog, wanted to go after him, so I thought I would bring Tadeu inside and come back to tend the bird. But as I opened the building's front door, I saw the bird had started walking toward the very busy avenue in front of us.
It started trying to cross the avenue, probably hoping it could reach the safety of the bushes and the trees by the river on the other side. It made it past the first car, then past the second one (which seems to have touched it but not hurt it), then past the third one...
He was a little over halfway to the other side when the fourth car's tyres ran over him. Other cars finished the job of turning the little helpless, harmless creature into nothing more than a print on the asphalt.
And all I could do was watch.
